Ms Katherine Baczewski's Health Blog
Fall is here! It is a time when a lot of high calorie foods start to be added into our diets and we tend to be a lot more sedentary.
Some of our favorite fall foods like pumpkin pie, pumpkin pastries and pumpkin cheesecake start to come out at our favorite restaurants! Instead of having these desserts, try buying a can of pumpkin from the grocery store and mix in 2 tablespoons of fat free whipped cream. You get all the flavor and nutrients of pumpkin, without all the calories! Are you also craving some warm soups and stews? Be careful if you buy canned soups at the store, the sodium content is usually much to high! Try cooking soups and stews from scratch. Make sure you are making the soup lean, by avoiding cream and by adding in lean meats.
Football season is also here! Often we consume foods every weekend that could be packing on the pounds. Two common foods we eat while watching the game, wings which are about 100 calories each and pizza about 200-300 calories for a large slice. Alcohol, like beer and mixed drinks, can also provide many hidden calories. Try staying home for the game and try these tricks. Bake wings at home, instead of frying. Take the skin off before you bake and use sauce sparingly. You may even consider letting your guest add sauce after they are prepared. For pizza, use your grill. Take a whole wheat crust, add a little bit of olive oil and reduced fat cheese, spinach and any vegetables you like. You now have a lower calorie well balanced pizza! Try light beer or a dry wine to decrease calories while drinking at the game.
Although we may be done with the 90 degree weather, we should get out and have some fun! Find fun fall things to do. Go apple picking, horseback riding, biking, rake leaves, go for a hike or go to a fall festival! Remember to just keep moving during these upcoming months!
